SEWA lauches New Initiative Family Services
Sewa International USA is launching a Family Services Program to assist community members seeking immediate help and expert guidance in an emergency situation.
“As the community needs are multiplying with growing numbers, there is an urgent need to assist families from a Hindu perspective. Sewa is happy to offer Family Services to the community” said Professor Sree Sreenath, President of Sewa International.
“At the recently concluded national conference in Houston, Sewa board of directors and representatives from its various chapters decided to launch a pilot program to provide family services” Professor Sreenath said in a statement.
Upward Trend
“Sewa volunteers have noticed an upward trend in families seeking external help to manage an emergency situation. The experience, cultural understanding and a caring hand is what Sewa seeks to provide through this program” Sewa’s President explained.
“Because most members of the Hindu community in USA are immigrants, they do not posses the knowledge and are not surrounded by experienced people to navigate the American system in a crisis”.
“Emergencies leave families emotionally exhausted especially when people are away from their extended families. A lack of culturally compatible support system leads families to disastrous consequences” Professor Sreenath remarked.
Pilot Project
“Sewa takes a holistic view in helping families in distress. Sewa’s Boston and Houston chapters have taken up the Family Services as a pilot project this year. We are working very closely with Boston based Indian Circle for Caring (http://ouricc.org) to implement this project” Professor Sreenath mentioned.
“This year, Boston and Houston Sewa volunteers will work very closely with their local communities to establish processes and to develop a set of services to assist families in case of accidents, illnesses, death or severe family issues”.
“Creating an information repository, providing a helpline and building local volunteer base with expertise to advice community members in need is the immediate goals of the Family Services Program”.
