10/09/2009, Work done on October 8th, 2009 at/for Kurnool and Mahaboob Nagar districts

Brief on the work in Mahaboob Nagar/ Palamur district :

Areas in and around Gadwal, Aiza, Vaddepalli, Kollapur, Aalampur, Alapadu Mandals are severely affected. Service activities are going on in these mandals.

In Second Phase of operations, Volunteers started preparing 5,000 Basic Utility and Food Kits to be distributed among the some of the most affected families. It is estimated that around 16,000 families are the worst affected. Sevabharathi is looking forward for some more organizations or donors to contribute more in this process.

8 Medical camps are being conducted under the supervision of Dr Surender Reddy, Organizing Secretary, Arogya Bharathi with the help of his associates.

Sri Vidwan Reddy, Seva Bharathi’s State Organizing Secreatary is operating out of his base camp in Gadwal to supervise the relief operations in the district.

Several Organizations and Individuals are coming to Seva Bharathi to distribute their Relief Material through its Network.

Brief on the work done in Karnool District:

The findings of the survey conducted by volunteers in Kurnool district :

  • 97 Villages are totally washed out and still marooned under water

  • 40 Villages are worst affected, water receded leaving mountains of mud

  • 5 tribal hamlets are destroyed by the floods, 8 more Traibal Hamlets are still under water.

  • 55,000 Families out of 142 Villages have lost every penny of their own.

Rashtra Sevika Samithi has adopted Mavidalapadu village for restoration process. 360 Wollen Blankets and 500 Utility and Food grain Kits are distributed.

Volunteers headed by Mr Balaiah from Nandikotkur Village adopted Ganapuram village. They are taking care of all the necessities of village residents till the restoration to the normalcy.

Betamcherla residents came forward to adopt Panchalingala and Niduduru villages which are worst affected by the floods. They are taking care all the necessities of the affected villagers.

Ramakrishna Mission and Seva Bharathi has adopted Sultanpuram to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected families.

Volunteers from Nellore distributed 1000 Utility and Food Grain Kits to the affected families in Tandrapadu village.

Volunteers from Amalapuram distributed 2 truck loads Utility and Food Grain Kits in the affected areas in Kurnool- rural.

Several Voluntary organizations are handing over the material to Seva Bharathi for distribution among the affected people as it has proven its skills in disaster management by distributing material efficiently and peacefully.

 

Volunteers from Proddutur are preparing 1,000 utility and food grain kits to be distributed.

Volunteers from Goldsmith association are also preparing Utility and Food Grain Kits worth 4 lac rupees with the help of Seva Bharathi.

Medical Camps being Conducted ;

  • Medical Camp conducted at Jagannatha gattu in Kurnool Town has served several people.

  • 5 Mobile clinics are moving around the villages providing necessary medical help.

  • Ashwini hospital is providing medical services round the clock through its mobile medical clinic with the help of Seva Bharathi.

  • A medical camp is being conducted by Dr Sindhu Nr Mantralaya.

  • Dr Ramasubbaiah is providing medical help in the villages around Nandikotkur going around in his medical van.

  • Dr Udayshankar along with his associates are going around the marooned villages nr Nandyala town in boats and providing the necessary medical help.

  • Medical camp is being conducted at Nandyala under supervision of Dr.Sahadevudu.

  • Dr Parameshwar and Dr Murali are going around the marooned tribal hamlets and other villages and provided necessary medical help.

520 Volunteers from different parts of Kurnool district have actively participated in the relief activities.

130 Volunteers from Anantapur district and 60volunteers from Hyderabad participated for four days in helping their brotherhood.

Work done on 6th and 7th October at/ for Kurnool and Mahaboob Nagar districts Sevabharathi and RSS

In the second Phase, we established 5 Camps in Mahaboobnagar District. Base Camp at Gadwal, which is in the middle of the affected area. Our Volunteers have surveyed, they found 58 Villages washed away in the floods 16,000 families are totally affected.

At present, We are trying to give the Basic Utility kits for the families of 5to6 k depending on the availability. We are also taking support from other voluntary organizations in this regard to reach out to total no of families.

In third Phase, We are making survey in 58 Villages to start reconstruction and rehabilitation process. Weavers – Gadwal, Instruments of artisans.

Team of 10 Doctors are going around the affected areas in Mahaboob Nagar district treating and giving the medicines under the leadership of Dr Surender Reddy. Over 2.5 Lacs worth of medicines are being distributed.

In addition to the local volunteers, 50 Senior volunteers are coordinating the activities in Karnool and Mantralaya surroundings.

In Kurnool, Still 200 Villages are still under water hence the total damage could not be assessed so far. Volunteers have started the relief operations in those villages where water has receded.

In the Kurnool Town, Team of 200 Volunteers are formed to help the citizens in removing the slush out of their houses.

Seva Bharathi is one of the very few Non Governmental Organizations allowed to distribute Food Packets around Kurnool District by the local administration.

Keshava Reddy Group of educational institutions supplied 20 Vehicles towards the logistics of Relief Operations.

“Pullareddy Group of educational institutions” extending necessary help through its resources in relief operations.

To bring normalcy in the lives of affected people and areas by the floods, huge amount of funds are required. We are working in evaluating the need of the hour once the water recedes.

Several Voluntary organizations are coming forward to take the help of manpower available with us to distribute the material available with them.

10/06/2009, Relief operation in Karnataka

Raichur and Manvi taluks were the worst affected in Karnataka because of the overflowing of Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers. Volunteers started relief work on October 3. The first day itself more than 6000 food packets were prepared and handed over to government machinery to supply by helicopter to the people stranded in the floods. On October 4, another 6000 food packets were distributed to the people of three villages camping at Ganadal village. On October 5 onwards the relief camps were started at Chickmanchali, Nadugaddemalakapur, Tungabhadra villages, which are on the Banks of River Tungabhadra.




Raichur District

Raichur and Manvi Taluks were the worst affected areas in the recent floods due to the overflowing of Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers. Volunteers of both the taluks started the relief work since October 3rd, 2009.

 

On October 3rd, 6000 food packets were prepared and handed over to Govt. machinery which was supplied to the people stranded in the floods by helicopter. On October 4th, another 6000 food packets were distributed to the afflicted people from three villages camping at Ganadal Village.

 

On October 5th onwards, Releif Camps were set up at Chickmanchali, Nadugaddemalakapur, Tungabhadra Villages which are on the banks of river Tungabhadra. This iniative gathered support from all the communities and organizations of Raichur. Around 50 volunteers are involved in this work.

 

Bagalkot District:

Forty Villages of Hungund and Badami taluks were worst affected due to the flooding of Malaprabha River. Houses collapsed due to heavy rains all over the District.

Releif work like Food Distribution and Medical facilities were started in several villages by volunteers. On October 3rd about 30,000 rotis were collected in Bagalkot and distributed in six affected villages. On October 5th and 6th, Seva Bharati volunteers as well as collage students started relief work in 28 villages. Food distribution and survey work of damage caused by the floods are being carried out by the volunteers.

 

Belgaum District:

The heavy rain from the last two weeks in the Belgaum district has caused immense loss of not only property but also of lives. On the same day, following things were collected by our volunteers and sent to the affected areas in Ramdurg and Savdatti talukas.

1) Rs.60,000 cash,

2) 2 tons of Rice,

3) 1 quintal Daal,

4) Plastic sheets worth 60,000 were purchased and distributed to 500 houses in Savdatti taluka,

    19 volunteers from Belgaum city went to Ramdurg, Savdatti and Bailhongal taluka for two days to monitor the relief work.

    Total 76 volunteers worked continuously for three days and arranged Ganji Kendra (langar) in 7 villages in Ramdurg Taluka and 2 places in Ramdurg city for 3 days where more than 12,000 people were served food. Plastic covers were also distributed to 250 houses and 170 houses in the Sureban village of Ramdurg taluka. In Savdatti taluka, Ganji Kendra ran for 3 days at 6 places wherein 3,000 people were served food. Also 20 of our volunteers worked in the Ganji Kendra run by other social organizations aiding the relief efforts. 230 volunteers worked for 3 days in Ramdurg taluka and more than 100 volunteers in Savdatti taluka. Around 5 doctors are working in the affected areas of both the taluka. A cash amount of Rs.1.5 lakhs was collected in 2 days in Belgaum city.

A doctor’s meeting is called for in the evening to collect medicines which will be distributed to the affected areas through the doctors working there. Apart from this 1 ton of rice, 1 quintal of daal and other food materials, along with plastic sheets for 500 houses was sent to Bijapur District.

Gadag District:

Releif work was started on October 4th in Holealur, Nargund, Mundargi, Magadi, and Vaasan. Food was prepared and distributed to 2,600 people daily for the past 3 days.15 volunteers of Magadi village repaired the damaged road between Gojanur & Akkigonda villages.

10/05/2009, Flood Relief Report from Seva Bharati, Western Andhra Pradesh

Seva Bharati & RSS volunteers responded swiftly to help the needy before anybody including the government could reach these areas.

RSS initiated the process of bringing together and collaborating with various NGOs and individual philanthropists for an coordinated effort to use the resources efficiently and appropriately.

First Phase of Relief Operations:

Food packets were distributed to the victims brought by volunteers from the neighboring villages and Districts. Seva Bharati has supplied food packets to over one lakh families in three districts for past three days, reaching the interior rural areas of Karnool and Mahaboob Nagar. Since the connectivity to Karnool has been cut off, Material is being brought in from Anantapur, Kadapa, Nellore and Raichure of Karnataka

Seva Bharati started the relief camps in Karnool town in Saraswati Sishu Mandir and G Pulla Reddy Engineering College. The relief camps have supplied thousands food and water packets to the Karnool town from places.

Volunteers from Adoni went Mantralaya cleaning the temple and clearing the dead remains of cows of Goshala and other animals. Many of the dead include piligrims to the Mantrala Temple. Volunteers have removed these bodies and handed them over to the police for identification.

In Hindupur, Seva Bharati is running five food preparation and collection centres for materials to be sent to Karnool Districts.

In Anantapur, volunteers started a food collection centre with an intention of sending 10,000 food packets. With an overwhelming response from the people of Anantapur, the centre could prepare 50,000 packets and other material worth 5 lakhs sent for the needy in Karnool district.

In Dronachalam (Dhone), volunteers sent 50,000 food packets and 1 lakh water packets for Karnool.

Volunteers from Nandikotkur went into the villages which went under the water and rescued 45 families and brought them to the safety and gave them food.

In Gadwal, A relief Camp is being conducted at TTD Kalyana Mandapam. Food packets are being supplied to 200 Villages from there.

In Hyderabad, 2000 volunteers are going around and collecting the funds, food and material which are needed for those affected by the flood. Two collection centre are established at State HQ of RSS and Keshav Memorial School. Every Day 4 truckloads of food material and 2 trucksloads of other immediate necessities are transported to flood affected region. 200 volunteers rushed to the flooded areas to aid in the hygiene and sanitation work from the city.

Sri Raghavulu, All India Secreatary VHP, visited affected areas and met the volunteers involved in the work in Karnool,

Sri T V Deshmukh , State President of RSS and State Organizing Secretary of Seva Bharati Sri Vidwan Reddy have visited Gadwal relief Camp and met the volunteers working in Mahaboob Nagar.

Second Phase of Relief :

The affected areas of Mahaboob Nagar District have ben surveyed showing that 58 villages are badly destroyed and 16,000 families of many other villages are devastated. The immediate requirement of these families to be settle down to their daily chores with their necessities. Hence, Seva Bharati is planning to supply the kits to 5,000 families which will enable them to start off their living. Each Kit will consists of Kitchen utensils, food grains and material of daily use.

In Karnool District, 250-300 villages are still under water hence the survey is not yet completed. Nonetheless,  Karnool Town is slowly returning to normalcy. Around Karnool Town 29 villages have been severely affected. Twenty villages hae been surveyed and serviced in Karnool.

We are planning to undertake similar steps to supply daily life supporting kits to the people to start their daily routine once we have the final statistics.

Third Phase of Relief :

Seva Bharati has initiated planning for rehabilitation for the distressed people and reconstruction of the destroyed villages. Various means of rehabilitation for the victims have been identified which includes supplying them implements required for their occupation. In this process, Seva Bharati is  coordinating these efforts with many other voluntary, social, cultural and spiritual organizations.

10/05/2009, Report from Seva Bharati, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

A temporary relief center in vijayawada – Indira Gandhi Stadium was set up to meet the immediate necessities of the victims. Nearly 5,000 people were provided breakfast, milk for the children and fruits. More then 200 volunteers are engaged in this relief effort.

There is an immediate need of medicines, utincles and house hold items. The camp will have to continue working for the next five days due to increasing need for relief work. Seva Bharati, RSS, V.H.P, and Jana Sankshema Samithi have combined and coordinated their efforts in the relief activities.
 

10/05/2009, Report from Youth for Sewa, Bangalore, Karnataka

In Karnataka, the relief activities are going on with Raichur and Bagalkote as the main centers. Gopalji (prant pracharak of Uttara Karnataka) is personally coordinating the efforts. 'Ganji Kendra's (centers serving food) are setup in affected areas. A team of doctors is also working in these two centers. Blankets are being collected from Rashtrotthana Parishat and other organizations from all over Karnataka to these areas.

Volunteers from other districts are also reaching to the affected areas. Moreover, volunteers from Youth for Seva are going from Bangalore tomorrow.

Because of communication problems right now, we could not get pictures from these centers. Will try to get them soon.

Sewa International Pledges Immediate $10,000 Relief from General Funds

More than 200 people have been killed in Karnataka and neighboring Andhra Pradesh (AP) in heavy rain since Wednesday September 30. ‘Over 40,000 houses have been damaged. Over 500 villages have already been inundated in AP while 1406 villages are marooned in Karnataka. Nearly 1.8 million affected and half a million rendered homeless.

SEWA International, USA supported NGO Seva Bharati, Youth for Seva, and Jana Sankshema Samiti volunteers in India have already launched relief camps in those towns of AP & Karnataka where food, medicine and essential items are being provided to the people. Seva Bharati volunteers  cleared the dead bodies of human and animals. Seva  Bharathi has created a Flood relief kit consisting of 3 sets of cooking utensils, two plates and glasses,  10kg rice, 1kg dal, 1/2 kg tamarind, 1/4 kg masala powder, 1 blanket and 1 mat,  costing $25 (Rupees 1,200). Working round the clock the volunteers are rescuing, distributing relief materials, providing food and essential health care.

Announcing an immediate relief of $10,000 from general funds towards flood relief,  SEWA International USA President, Professor Sree N. Sreenath said,  “The tragedy that has unfolded through nature’s fury is unimaginable. Our volunteers on the ground are working very hard under adverse conditions. Public support through donations will help mitigate the sufferings of poor people. We exhort our donors to check with their employers for matching contributions. We even have a capped dollar-to-dollar matching program for large donations from institutions such as temples and cultural associations. Many Telugu and Kannada Associations are working with us in raising awareness and helping.”

Further Prof. Sreenath continues, “Immediate concern is relief, but lurking behind is the more challenging rehabilitation. Many people have lost their livelihood and homes. Sewa International recognizes experientially that in the longer term we need to rebuild homes, schools, medical clinics, and not the least – damaged lives. Our volunteers on site are assessing the damage and planning rehabilitation already. Sewa International is in this for the long term.”

10/04/2009, Gokavaram, Andhra Pradesh

The Bhakta Kannappa Gurukulam, Gokavaram, has now become a relief camp for 320 flood victims of the surrounding villages and the numbers are growing. The Back waters of Krishna river are inundating the surrounding villages. The Villagers are looking for any help and it is Seva Bharathi as usual that is catering to their hunger and helplessness. Voluinteers of Seva Bharathi working for Chenchu Tribals have been serving the local villagers with food, blankets and medicines.

The School Bhakta Kannppa gurukulam has 62 children, all Chenchu boys, and has been working in the surrounding villages as well as Chenchu pentas (hamlets) in medical aid through a mobile dispensary and hospital as well as the residential school. For the past decade the school has been the focal point and nucleus for awareness in the chenchus as well as local villagers.

 

10/03/2009, Report from Vijayawada City

We have visited the afected areas of Vijayawada City. Nearly 15 slum areas which are by the side of river Krishna have been shifted to near by relief camps.Nearly 1 Lakh people are taking shelter in these camps. We are feeding one of the major relief camp at Indira Gandhi Stadium. Seva Bharati, RSS and VHP jointly doing this work with the help of Laila Group of companies run by Sri. Gokaraju Gangaraju.

One group of volunteers are visiting flood effected areas of Divisima and Guntur district. Most of the island villages (Lanka) in these two districts are affected very badly.

Flood Relief Services - Vijaywada

A temporary relief center in vijayawada – Indira Gandhi Stadium was meeting the immediate necessities of the refuges nearly 5,000 people were provided morning break fast, milk for the children and fruits.

Sri Mangesh Bhinde Kshetriya Pracharak, Sri N.Ravi Advocate President Jana Sankshema Samithi visited the relief camp and instructed the swayamsevaks. Nearly 200 swayamsevaks are already plunged into service activities. Sri G.Gangaraju garu personally supervising the camp.

There is immediate need of medicines, utensils and house hold items. It seems the camp has to organize at least for another five days. R.S.S, V.H.P, Jana Sankshema Samithi is combinedly coordinating the relief activity.
