Guyana Flood Relief and Rehabilitation

Some statistics of the relief work done by various organizations that are part of the National Ramnavmi committee is as follows,

  • Food was cooked at various mandirs like Radha Krishna Mandir, Georgetown, Gopaal Mandir, Lusignan, Cummings Lodge/Industry Hindu Mandir, Cornelia Ida Mandir, WCD etc.
  • All the foodstuff was donated by people in the community
  • The tablets were obtained from the Ministry of Health
  • Dr. Beni Balkaran, a pediatrician from Trinidad (originally from Guyana) volunteered his services for one week. Free medical clinic was run at various locations with the help of many other doctors. Children’s health was given special attention.

Plans for Rehabilitation - Ramnavmi committee has identified the post needs some rehabilitation

 

  • Clean up of communities – Clean up of homes, streets and public places is a urgent necessity. The NDC and other agencies are trying their best. Ramnavmi Sewa has taken up cleaning work in Lusignan and Cummings Lodge

 

  • Assisting affected dairy farmers – About a hundred dairy farmers in Lusignan were severely affected as the common pasture was totally destroyed during the flood. Ramnavmi Committee will help them with fertilizers etc.

 

  • Assisting Cash Crop Farmers – Many cash crop farmers lost their crop due to the flood. Ramnavmi Committee is identifying the farmers in Mahaica area and help then with seedlings, fertilizers and pesticides.

 

  • Assisting in reconstruction of homes – Many houses and household items suffered a lot of damage during the flood. Ramnavmi Committee is identifying the needy families in Cummings Lodge squatting area to give the necessary assistance.
