Hansii Ke Favvare – 2007: A stand-up Hindi comedy and poetries Sewa International USA hosted a very entertaining literary program on the evening of July 28, 2007 at the Sunnyvale Hindu Temple auditorium. Two of the very highly regarded Hindi kavis (poets), who are traveling the US, kept the 250-strong audience laughing and clapping throughout the event that lasted till 11 pm.

The two kavis were Shri Manik Varma who is well known for his Comedy and Political satire and Shri Gajendra Solanki who is a poet of Veer Ras and patriotism. After a brief introduction, Gajendra ji started the show with some of his poetries overflowing with the feeling of patriotism. The audience appreciated each of the poems with a loud applaud.

There were a few appropriately placed jokes and moments of laughter. As Manik ji took control of the stage, the political satire filled the space. His poems were very well received by the audience. Especially enjoyable was a dual between the two poets when each of them spontaneously fielded “attack” from one another in a very humorous way. There was a dinner break, after which the audience along with the poets was recharged -the performers with renewed “ammunitions” and the audience with renewed energy.

Some more thought-provoking poetry were recited based on Indian culture, current political situation in India as well as in USA and about those who dedicated their life for their country. The event ended with a beautiful song on “Vande Mataram” and the evening culminated with the slogan – “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

The event was a fund-raising program by Sewa International, a 501 –c (3) non-profit, charitable organization (www.sewausa.org). A brief video on the several projects offered by Sewa International was presented soon after the break. Sewauas.org lists several projects supported by Sewa International in India, USA, Surinam and other countries.

Fund raising was for a specific project, Yuva for Sewa. Yuva for Sewa provides a unique opportunity for college students and young professionals to make a positive difference in the world. Sewa International USA encourages young adults to volunteer and provide a helping hand to those that needs the most. The projects are designed to develop personality, build leadership and team work, empower visionaries and provide experience in helping the community. It is an opportunity to put Swami Vivekananda's vision of Sewa into action. This year 11 young adults were chosen and some of them are serving in India, USA & Surinam currently.
