Health Fair for Hispanic Community - Aug 2005
Recognizing the growing Health needs of the un-insured people in the Hispanic community, Sewa International USA, on August 28th 2005 and October 8th 2005, organized two health fairs for the Hispanic community in collaboration with The Hispanic Support Group (HSG) Inc., at The Calvary Church in Duluth GA. The Objective of the Health Fair was preliminary inspection and diagnosis of breast cancer in women. After Preliminary diagnosis patients were referred for Mammograms. Many Women from the Hispanic community Came forward to avail themselves of this novel opportunity.
The First fair on August 26th 2005 was inaugurated by Ms. Mary Garcia of The Hispanic Support Group Inc. She explained the objective of the health fair and the problem of breast cancer faced by women specifically in the Hispanic community and the work being done by The HSG., to alleviate this problem. She introduced Mr. Srikanth Konda, National coordinator of Sewa International USA and Ms. Pooja Parashar, Coordinator for The Health Fair and other SEWA Volunteers. Mr. Sandeep Parashar, a SEWA Volunteer, briefly spoke on SEWA International USA and how it is making a difference to the society through various community projects.
Dr. Asmita Joshi, Dr Aparna Mahakala, and Dr Chandrika Garg, three doctors from the Greater Atlanta Indian Community participated in the health fair and offered their services selflessly for this noble cause. While Dr Aparna spoke Spanish (something which the crowd cheered for), other doctors used the help of a
Hispanic translator, belonging to The HSG. The health fair lasted half a day. Sewa Volunteers had made necessary arrangements to make sure that every
one felt comfortable in an environment where the Indian and Hispanic ethnic cultures worked together for good cause.
Second Health Fair Was organized in 5th Annual Health and Job fair at The Calvary Church in Duluth GA on October 8th 2005. This was inaugurated by Consul general of Mexico and Mayor of Duluth GA.
Dr Nibedita Patro and Dr Aeuna Bopanna volunteered for the Health fair. Dr Nibedita is Family Practice Physician since last 3 yrs Cumming GA. She did her Medical schooling in India and residency in ST Louis USA.Aruna Bopanna did her Medical schooling from guntur India. She is trained in internal medicine at Wright state university, OH. At Present she is working as Hospitalist at Emory hospital Medicine, Atlanta GA
The HSG community coordinators, Andy Garcy and Maria Garcia, profusely appreciated the contribution and spirit of SEWA volunteers to have come forward and conducted the health camp so successfully. Mr. Garcia also emphasized the need for the various communities to come together and help each other, which perfectly aligned with Sewa Internationals motto “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which means “The World is one family” Mr Garcia also invited Sewa International USA to partner with HSG in their annual health fair in October 2005, which is conducted on a much larger scale.
The SEWA team which made this event a grand success included Amol, Gopi, Rakesh, Sandeep, Pooja, Ganesh, Gaurav ,Ganga,Srinivas,Pandu,Srineedhi, Srirekha,Anu, and Meeta. The health fair was instrumental in forging a relationship with the Hispanic Support Group, which will pave way for future collaboration.
