What is Yuva for Sewa?

Yuva for Sewa (YFS) is a Sewa fellowship program for Youth. It is an initiative by Sewa International, a global service organization, to provide an opportunity to youth to participate in service projects around the world.

What is unique about Yuva for Sewa?

Yuva for Sewa involves its fellows at the grassroots level where they are in direct contact with the project. This results in a tremendous learning and satisfying experience for the fellows. This also makes the project more challenging and fun at the same time.

What are the qualifications needed to become a YFS fellow?

YFS fellows need to be between 18-30 years of age. There are no specific academic qualifications needed. Fellow need to be sincerely committed to the value of service work. They should be willing to explore their personal boundaries with a strong desire to learn.

What is the selection process?

The selection process involves two rounds of phone interviews and one personal interview. The total interview process should be completed with a couple of weeks time.

Can I get college credits for being an Fellow?

Cleveland State University, Ohio is willing to give YFS fellows credits for their fellowship. Students from any university are eligible for these credits. Applicants are highly encouraged to look for such opportunities from their local universities too.

Is financial aid available?

The YFS fellowship stipend covers boarding, lodging and local transport. The funding is generally in-kind only however it may include a minimal cash stipend. Fellows are encouraged to look for financial support to cover the air fare to their destination. YFS team can help in finding sponsorship and fund raising.

What about health insurance?

Fellows are advised to carry international health insurance which is valid in the country where they intend to fellow. Our NGO partner will coordinate locally to attend any medical need.

Are there any citizenship requirements?

There are no specific citizenship requirements. All fellows should carry a valid passport and visa which would allow reentry into the USA after completion of their fellowship.

Is there a language requirement?

There is no specific language requirement. Fellows will be accompanied by the local volunteers during the project. The fellowship will also be preceded by an orientation program which will help the fellow familiarize with his area of work.

Can I visit my friends or family during my fellowship? Can I take a vacation?

YFS team strongly encourages its fellows to make the full use of their time towards their Sewa project and fulfill their agreement. Under special circumstances, permissions may be given to visit friends or family.

Is the YFS fellowship difficult?

The fellowship will certainly be physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging. It is designed to be that way. Each step is a great learning experience. It is an opportunity to tap your latent talent and discover yourself, while you discover the world.
