My experience as a teacher with Sewa Aspire has been nothing short of extraordinary. Initially, I was nervous and had signed up as a Teacher’s Assistant, thinking that maybe I would just help out around class but teaching really wasn’t for me. However, my first class at Coyote Hills Elementary completely changed that perspective. The room was full of energy, and even though I didn’t have a lesson plan ready, I managed to improvise and teach a group of 4th graders about math with exponents. I had never planned to even teach, yet seeing the energy of the class pushed me to get involved. Watching the students listen attentively and engage with what I was teaching gave me an incredible sense of confidence. That moment made me realize that I was capable of not only managing a class but also inspiring young learners to enjoy what they were learning.
After I had moved to Schilling Elementary, my focus shifted toward teaching lessons that the kids would be more interested and hands-on to learn about. I wanted every student to feel involved and excited to participate, so I, along with the help with my amazing team members, Sanskriti, Garv, and Ritvik, began to design our own lesson plans on topics that would capture their interest such like finances, speech and debate, and even a fun spelling bee tournament. Seeing the kids actively participate and enjoy these activities made us feel accomplished and happy to bring the kids a worthwhile experience. Through Sewa Aspire, I learned valuable life skills that go far beyond the classroom… leadership, public speaking, adaptability, and the importance of keeping your audience in mind. Most importantly, Sewa Aspire provided me with the joy of taking initiative and creating meaningful experiences for others. Overall, Sewa Aspire has been one of the most eye opening experiences and I definitely recommend this to other High Schoolers looking to gain teaching and leadership experience.
