Chapter: Detroit, MI

Overview

Detroit, located in southeast Michigan on the Detroit River between Lake Huron and Lake Erie, is the largest city in the state and the tenth-largest in the country. It is the oldest major city west of the original colonies and the only city in the US that allows you to travel south into Canada. It began as a fur-trading town in the 1700s, Detroit took full advantage of its prime geographical location in the 1800s, becoming a major shipping and manufacturing center. With an influx of workers from Europe and the American South, including many African Americans, Detroit was an industrial juggernaut in the early 1900s. During the two World Wars, Detroit was a leading supplier to the military. The birthplace of the automobile and the home of the "Big 3" (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler), Detroit remains the nucleus of the industry despite competition from Japan and Europe. One of the largest manufacturing cities in the country, Detroit is a leader in steel, fabricated-metal, chemicals, paper products, food and beverages. The health industry is also among the city's leading employers.

    Detroit Chapter: Sewa AI Workshop

    Date: Saturday, March 21
    Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: 24288 Indoplex Cir, Farmington Hills, MI 48335

This workshop is primarily intended for LEAD students (current and past participants -  limited to 45 Students).

    Workshop Overview

From Transformers to Agents: Building with Generative AI & Google ADK

Generative AI has evolved rapidly—from early rule-based systems to powerful transformer architectures developed by organizations like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.

This interactive workshop introduces participants to the foundations of modern Generative AI and demonstrates how these technologies power today’s intelligent systems.

Participants will explore how AI models have progressed over time, understand the key ideas behind large language models (LLMs), and build real AI agents using Google’s Agent Development Kit (ADK).

By the end of the session, students will not only understand how modern AI works but will also gain hands-on experience creating AI agents that can reason, call tools, and automate real-world tasks.

Whether you are a beginner curious about AI or an aspiring machine learning engineer, this workshop will provide clarity, confidence, and practical skills to start building with AI.

    What You’ll Learn

    • The evolution of Generative AI: from rule-based systems to modern transformer models

    • How Large Language Models (LLMs) work and why transformers changed AI development

    • The concept of AI agents and how they automate complex workflows

    • How to build and extend AI agents using Google ADK

    Workshop Format (60 Minutes)

Part 1: The Rise of Generative AI (20–25 minutes)

    • History of AI: Rule-based systems → Machine Learning → Deep Learning → Transformers

    • Why Large Language Models are so powerful

    • Real-world applications of Generative AI across industries

Part 2: Hands-On Session – Building AI Agents with Google ADK (25–30 minutes)

    • What is an AI agent?

    • Setting up Google ADK

    • Live demo: Creating a simple AI agent

    • Extending agents with tools and workflows
